Rye Lane Mural Artists: Announced

Get It Done and Southwark Council are delighted to announce the selection of three local artists who will lead the creation of new large-scale murals along Rye Lane, celebrating the unique cultural heritage, stories, and spirit of Peckham.

NINA GRAZETTE

Living in Peckham for 24 years, Nina Grazette’s (Live from the Rye) paintings celebrate Black culture and everyday moments of beauty through colourful paintings. After a cancer diagnosis in 2018, Nina began using her art to explore her mixed heritage and identity, developing a distinctive style. She is currently studying Fine Art - Painting at UAL Camberwell.

For her mural, Nina draws inspiration from Peckham’s rich musical history. Her design depicts a joyful scene of people dancing and connecting across generations. From the Windrush-era sounds to DJs like Mad Professor to present day live events like Steam Down, Nina’s mural will reflect on how music has shaped the area.

VALERIA SALINAS TORO

Valeria Salinas Toro (Resistance and Resilience) is a non-binary artist born and raised in Peckham, whose work blends Afrofuturism with painting and digital tools to explore the past, present, and future. Their abstract, interactive visions celebrate joy, play, and the creation of new worlds. They are deeply involved in the local community, facilitating youth zine workshops and producing projects celebrating SE15’s creativity.

Collaborating with local grassroots groups, their mural will honour Peckham’s resilience, featuring bold colours, imagery of resistance, and text to highlight the area’s layered history. Drawing from their experiences growing up in 2000s Peckham, Valeria envisions a wildflower meadow symbolising collective action, creativity, and the strength of community.

REGAN GILFLIN

Regan Gilflin (Flavours of Rye Lane) is a multidisciplinary artist rooted in storytelling, often exploring themes of cultural identity, community, and shared rhythms. Her projects often reflect themes of cultural identity and community, previously working the BBC and Transport for Wales, as well as leading workshops and creating murals with local groups.

For her mural, Regan takes inspiration from her upbringing in her dad’s Caribbean restaurant and her present life in Peckham. The mural will feature women’s braids with fruit-shaped beads symbolising the market’s fresh produce, celebrating the food and traditions that bring people together.

This six-month, community-led process began in September 2024 by forming a Community Steering Panel, bringing together representatives from across the local area. The panel explored three key themes to celebrate through the murals, deciding on food stories, music stories and stories of resistance and resilience. Our community panel then shaped the artist open call to attract artists that would reflect the heart of Peckham.

We received an overwhelming amount of talented local applications, but our panel shortlisted just six artists. In November, our artists showcased their mural designs in a street exhibition on Rye Lane, inviting the public to vote for their favourite designs, spotlighting local talent and engaging the public in creative workshops around placemaking and public art.

Working with numerous local organisations, workshops and community engagement events will take place in the coming weeks, to incorporate local voices and ensure that the murals truly reflect the people of Rye Lane. The murals are scheduled for completion in March 2025.
