Live from the Rye

Southwark Council, London.
March 2025.

PART OF THE RYE LANE MURALS PROJECT

Get It Done is excited to finally announce Live from the Rye a new mural by Nina Grazette.

Located on Atwell Road, Live from the Rye honours the deep and diverse musical history of Peckham. The artwork draws on Nina’s 25 years in the neighbourhood, taking viewers on a vibrant journey through decades of sound and culture; from 60s Jazz to 70s punk to 80s DJs to 90s house parties, visually celebrating genres from reggae, ska, dub, grime and rap.

The mural is rich with references to Peckham’s music heritage: from long-lost record shops and DIY venues to the electric energy of Afro-punk collective Steam Down, rapper Giggs, and producer Lee “Scratch” Perry. To shape the work, Nina collaborated with local musicians and ran creative workshops with students from Harris Academy.

THE ARTIST

After surviving cancer twice in 2018, Nina Grazette decided to enrol in BA (Hons) Fine Art: Painting at Camberwell College of Arts, part of University of Arts London, using her practice and paintings as a way to reconnect with her heritage and reflect on her surroundings. Nina’s work celebrates everyday life, Black culture and moments of joy.

“Creating Live from the Rye has been my greatest artistic achievement, and painting it felt like a milestone - a reminder to keep creating and proof I was supposed to be here. To paint it in Peckham, the area that has watched me grow over the past 25 years made it even more special. I am proud to have created something that reflects the spirit of this community - its sound, its stories and its ever evolving journey.”

THE PROCESS

Painting Live from the Rye was such a collaborative process - working with London School of Muralism, Artmongers and 12 amazing volunteers across six intense days, filled with sunshine, jerk chicken and (appropriately for a music mural) speakers on full volume.

It didn’t come without challenges - building and taking down scaffold towers every day, rollering, painting, cleaning, all while navigating a busy public space - but working with such a large team every day was so rewarding. Everyone brought such commitment and care to helping bring Nina’s vision to life!

For a week, we got to sit in the heart of Atwell Road and watch life unfold around us, from Marlon’s jerk stall to the fruit and veg traders selling through Ramadan, to all the people stopping by to watch and chat.

Working in public space is never easy, but it’s exactly where we believe art should live, shaped by and shared with the people who pass by every day!
