The People's Jury on the Climate Crisis

The People's Jury, Blackburn.
May - Sept 2023.

Campaigns.

The People’s Jury are residents of Blackburn with Darwen who were asked by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council to come together to produce a set of recommendations in response to the question “What do we need to do in our homes, in business and our local area to respond to the climate change crisis?”. The result was a set of 14 recommendations, which can be found here.

“We are a jury that represents the diversity of Blackburn with Darwen; different ages, genders, ethnicities and backgrounds and have all worked together to agree a way forward. We are multiple backgrounds with one message.”

You can learn more about how the People’s Jury was set up here.

Get It Done and The National Festival of Making are collaborating with Blackburn with Darwen People’s Jury on the Climate Change Crisis to develop a piece of public art, relating to the recommendations. The aim of this collaboration is to engage the public in conversations and collective action around climate change, and generate civic pride through creativity and culture.

In May 2023, we proposed an exciting shadow-based piece of public art to be installed on the side of a central building, bringing attention to the changes in weather and passing of time as we draw closer to a climate-unstable future. The artwork will be accompanied by an online forum sharing tips and tricks on how to reduce our climate impact. You can access the forum here.

The piece has been co-designed with the People's Jury over the previous months, with a presence at the National Festival of Making to contribute suggestions to both the forum and artwork. The artwork will be launched in April 2024 at a community celebration event.
