Rye Lane Murals

Southwark Council, London.
Sept - March 2025.

Get It Done was delighted to lead the commissioning of three new landmark murals along Rye Lane, Peckham, celebrating the cultural, historical and social fabric of the area, with designs by three local artists and developed through collaboration with over 20 local organisations.

This year-long, community-led process began in September 2024 by forming a community steering panel, bringing together representatives from across the local area. Together, we explored three key themes to celebrate through the murals, deciding on food stories, music stories and stories of resistance and resilience. Our community panel shaped the artist brief to reflect the heart of Peckham.

In November, six shortlisted artists showcased their mural designs in a street exhibition along Rye Lane, inviting the public to cast over 1000 votes for their favourites, spotlighting local talent and engaging the public in creative workshops around placemaking and public art.

Our selected artists - Nina Grazette, Valeria Salinas Toro and Regan Gilflin - then began a period of local research and engagement, working with Southwark Archives and over 20 different local groups to shape meaningful designs.

The emphasis on local participation continued throughout the design process, with each mural developed through community engagement and co-design workshops. For Nina Grazette's musical mural, she collaborated with local musicians such as Afro-punk collective Steam Down, and led workshops at Harris Academy school exploring creative expression and street art.

For Regan Gilflin's food mural, she volunteered at Peckham Soup Kitchen to understand how they use food to bring people together and support the community to thrive. She also led creative fruit drawing workshops with residents and interviewed market traders.

For Valeria Salinas Toro's resistance mural, they led a weekend of filmmaking workshops with Southwark Youth Parliament, Making Numbers and USB Film; creating three short films interviewing members of the public and grassroots organisations on their experiences of the local area. They also worked extensively with archival material from Southwark Archives and local photographers.

The three murals were installed from March to July, with help from Artmongers, London School of Muralism, Puck Studio and local volunteers.

From Cllr Portia Mwangangye, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Parks & Young People:

“These murals are a fantastic addition to Southwark and the culture, community and

character of the local Peckham area. The work and thought that has gone into their creation is testament to the artists and the passion that people have for their communities which are such an important part of people’s lives. The way that Peckham’s history, diversity and achievements are portrayed and preserved in the themes of the artwork is something all residents can recognise and take pride in.”

We celebrated the final launch of the three murals in July 2025, with a guided walking tour and get together, with over 100 attendees including friends, residents, local communities, organisations and passersby alike.
